A Manifesto for a Yarn Shop

Posted: October 5, 2018

Here at Jenny Wren’s Yarns we were recently lucky enough to win a second British Knitting and Crochet Award. We were voted joint Best Independent Yarn Shop in the South East by our loyal customers and followers and we are thrilled!

The vision when we opened JWY in 2012 was to bring quality, natural fibres to the people of Ipswich and we’ve tried to stay true to that as much as possible. Many years ago, as a very new knitter, I found it difficult to buy yarn in my home town. Synthetic yarns seemed to be widely supplied in Ipswich, and they still are, but the natural fibres I wanted to use were harder to find. That’s where the idea for Jenny Wren’s came from!

What you will find on our shelves are timeless, quality yarns from some of the best suppliers in the UK and Europe including super soft merino’s, luxury silk blends and hard working cotton yarns for both knitters and crocheters. After all, if you’re using your time to lovingly create knitted or crocheted garments and other items, we believe you should be using the best quality yarns available to you.

That’s not to say our yarns aren’t affordable. We stock a wide range of mid price yarns, with our best sellers from as little as £2.99 per 50g ball for cotton/silk blend or a wool/acrylic mix.

We also stock beautiful British yarns from Baa Ram Ewe and West Yorkshire Spinners. These companies are helping to preserve rare breeds of British sheep which is something we wholeheartedly agree with here at Jenny Wren’s Yarns!

It’s not only the yarns you choose that are important. The tools you use should be of the best quality too. We predominantly stock Knit Pro needles and hooks. The laminated birch wood Symfonie needles are my absolute favourite but we also stock Zing, the colour coded metal needles.

We have worked hard to create a real woolly paradise for the knitters and crocheters of Ipswich and we are proud of what we have achieved over the years. Our knit groups have decorated the area with yarn bombings and firm friendships have been forged over tea, biscuits and yarn. We have helped to promote indie dyers and crafters from the area with pop up shops and workshops. Our classes have spread the love for knitting and crochet to new audiences with many dozens of people having successfully learned new skills with us over the years.

We’d like to thank everyone who has shopped with us, it’s down to you all that we are so successful. Thank you!
